Jake Rakes in the Pledges for Cycle for Autism!

Sometimes the singled-mindedness of kids with autism pays off! Jake Lamoureux, 11, who lives in St. Albert, spent the weekend camping in the fields with his dad, an agronomist. “He got a little fixated on raising money for Cycle for Autism,” says his mom, Cathy Lamoureux. Jake asked some folks he met from Sturgeon Valley Fertilizers about pledging for Cycle for Autism. “He was tenacious and wouldn’t take no for an answer!” his mom says. Jake ended up raising just under $500 in pledges all on his own!

Cycle for Autism brings awareness to the issues individuals and families face when they are touched with autism. But more than that, it’s a fun way to come out and support individuals and families who live with autism in the greater Edmonton area. Choo Choo the Clown and Miss Giggles will be there for the little ones. Fat Franks and Starbucks will make sure no one gets hungry. And there will be gate prizes, too!

The Autism Society of Edmonton Area applauds Jake’s extraordinary efforts to help raise funds and build awareness of autism in our community. Thank you, Jake!

Do It For Doodlebug!

Nicole is a 5 year old girl, famous for her smiles, giggles, snuggles and charm. Last year, she was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Her personality, charisma and determination are truly inspirational. So much so that last year, 85 family and friends got together to raise money and awareness for autism at the Cycle for Autism in Gold Bar Park. Team Doodlebug showed up to the event in bright yellow shirts, with one of Nicole’s favorite sayings on it (“Wait…waddabout me?!”) to honour and support her and her family.  It was a great experience, emotionally, to witness and be a part of a team that was brought together because of one little girl: Nicole (aka Doodlebug)!

Don't Get Left Behind!

Maybe it's the great food – Fat Franks hot dogs, tasty snacks, and Starbucks coffee. Maybe it's the live entertainment, courtesy of Miss Giggles and Choo Choo the Clown. Or maybe it's just the chance to raise money for a great cause while having a ton of fun with really great people. Whatever the reason, more people are signing up for Cycle for Autism everyday.

We've already got 10 teams signed up – teams like The Bell Family, Team Doodlebug, and Super Atticus and his Sidekick Wilder. Right they're out gathering pledges and getting ready to hit the trails of beautiful Gold Bar Park on June 3rd. Plus, we've got 4 more solo cyclists who will be going at it on their own. But we still need your help, and it's not too late! There's still time for you to bring together a team of your friends, family and co-workers to help us raise money for critical autism programs and services. Kids and adults with autism in our community are counting on you. And the best part is, you've got nothing to lose –It's going to be a great time!

The Creation of Team Doodlebug

We all have a “master plan” that we unknowingly plan early on in life that consists of finding a soul mate, starting a family and eventually growing old together to watch the cycle repeat itself.

In this plan, we all wish for bigger and better things for our loved ones because that’s what makes our “master plan” successful. We view the obstacles as negatives, rather than just another path that leads us to the same successful end. We compare our path to others feeling we got shorted because it’s not the “normal path” that others were faced with. We get so consumed with our “master plan” that we forget to focus on the obvious…the people who are in it.

With her smiles, giggles, snuggles and charm, Nicole has reminded us of just that.
